It says 05, May Home Checklist and has a picture of a roof

Curious which home maintenance chores you should do this spring? Get your checklist for May here.

May is the perfect time to get ahead of the heat. Here’s what to focus on this month.

For every month, you will see three category of tasks – reoccurring, maintain, and prep.

Reoccurring tasks are those that pop up more than once a year.

Prep is for those who are way behind in home maintenance chores. I would suggest starting there if that sounds like you and then adding on what you can from reoccurring and then maintain.

If you need help with those chores, join our free course, Prep.

The chores listed under Maintain are the chores we are covering in our course.

🔁 Reoccurring Tasks

These are the rhythm-makers of home care. Do them monthly to prevent small issues from snowballing.

  • Check water softener salt levels (if you have one- a must if you have a water heater and a softener.)
  • Change HVAC filter (add a reminder to your calendar to check it again in 1 to 3 months.)
  • Clean your kitchen disposal and/or drains. It keeps away odors and germs and helps you avoid clogs.
  • Run water and/or flush unused toilets and sinks. It keeps water in the p-trap, which prevents sewer gas to seep through.

🛠️ Maintain

Here is your home maintenance checklist for May. It’s on the lighter side this month so if you have extra time, go back and look at the previous months. Did you miss any?

  • Inspect exterior paint. Make sure the paint is serving as a shield against the elements.
  • Inspect the roof. A quick visual inspection can save you a lot of time and major headaches.
  • Check your sprinkler system if you have one. Make sure all the zones are working before summer hits.

🧰 Prep

Haven’t been keeping up with home maintenance? Keep it simple and just do these tasks to start. These tasks are the one and done tasks you can do that will make future maintenance and DIY task so much easier.

  1. New? Join one of our orientation sessions.
  2. Find and Label the Gas and/or Water Valves
  3. Organize Your Homes Papers and Records
  4. Create a Budget for Home Maintenance

Skills needed for the month

Learn about roof inspections

Many of us have NO business getting on a roof. Doesn’t mean we can’t educate ourselves.

Learn about your roof

Learn more about the relationship between roofs and attics.

What are we even looking at?

Learn how to speak to your roofer and what you are looking at. An educated customer is much less likely to be swindled. I have in my course a guide on how to conduct your own roof inspection without getting on the roof and how to hire a roofer.
