About Me: From Chaotic to Peaceful Home Ownership

Growing up in central Texas, I was raised in a family that perhaps overvalued DIY. Whatever broke, we fixed it… eventually. My dad, who could MacGyver his way through any home repair, wasn’t always great at prioritizing. Case in point: we lived with a hole in the ceiling above our front door for years before he eventually repaired it.

I inherited hard skills but lacked the logistical skills needed to consistently knock stuff off the maintenance chore list. As a married adult, my husband and I managed home maintenance well enough… until we had kids and moved into an older home.

Suddenly, we were MAXED out with:

    • Work demands

    • A sickly baby (thankfully, all better now!)

    • An energetic preschooler

    • A house needing constant attention

I swear we aged a decade in just four years.

The Korean Interlude: Discovering My Inner Honey Badger

Life took an unexpected turn when we moved to South Korea. No more house maintenance or yard work! Living in a high-rise apartment in a small Korean town was a beautiful adventure, and as a family, we decided to embrace the adventure, even when it pushed us WAY outside our comfort zone.

That’s when the honey badger became our mascot. Why? Because of that viral video, “The Crazy Nasty Honey Badger” (if you haven’t seen it, look it up – just be warned, there’s some colorful language. If you prefer a family-friendly introduction to honey badgers, watch this one: The Mighty Weasel | Are Honey Badgers One Of the World’s Smartest Animals?

.

The honey badger embodied what we needed to thrive:

    • Fearlessness in the face of challenges. He is undaunted by the threat of being bitten by a snake, being stung by bees, or upsetting a lion.

    • A “just get it done” mindset. it just does what needs to be done, no matter how hard. He has mastered the art of putting on his big boy pants and getting it done.

    • The smarts to use tools and work efficiently. Honey badgers are even known to use tools. They use them so well that it is hard to keep them in enclosures.

It became a running joke in our friend group to call upon our inner honey badgers when we had to do something crazy hard or new. Cross a sea of scooters in Vietnam with small kids? Honey badger it! Eat soup with moving bits? Honey badger it! Pee in a dark pit at a monastery? Ummm. No, actually, I couldn’t do it. But I held it like a honey badger…haha. TMI, TMI. Apologies.

Back to Reality: The Birth of Main + Tenacious

Returning to the US and buying a house, we realized we would become overwhelmed again by home maintenance. This time, I was determined not to let it beat us. I did NOT want to relive that again. I decided to spend some time before I started working again to create a personalized home maintenance manual and schedule. The goal? To make chores and tasks flow easier once life got busy again.

And that’s how Main + Tenacious was born – blending of my newfound honey badger tenacity and smart home maintenance.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your home’s needs, know that you’re not alone. I’ve been there, and I’m here to help you find your inner honey badger too. Together, we’ll tackle home maintenance with fearlessness, practicality, and maybe a touch of humor.
